MCMINN ASSIST GUIDELINES - Rent, Utility, & Food Assistance

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be late/in arrears on their rent and/or utilities for which they are applying.
  • Must have experienced an unexpected occurrence such as loss of income, medical emergency, or disaster that caused applicants to be behind/in arrears.
  • Applicants must be residents of McMinn County or Meigs County in Tennessee.
  • The residences for which the assistance is to be applied must be located within McMinn or Meigs counties.
  • Applicants must be the head of the household.
  • In cases of rent assistance, the landlord of the residence for which the assistance is to be applied cannot be a relative of the applicant. A copy of your lease must be provided with the application.
  • In cases of utility assistance, utilities must be in the applicant’s name. A copy of your most recent utility bill must be provided with the application.

COPIES OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION ARE REQUIRED FOR APPLICATIONS TO BE CONSIDERED

(Additional Documents May Also Be Required After Initial Application Review):

  • Photo Identification for all in the household 18 and older (Driver’s License, Passport, or State ID).
  • Proof of income for the last three months (pay stubs, Social Security award letter, etc.)
  • Copy of your current lease (rent assistance only).
  • Copy of your current utility bill (utility assistance only).
  • Copy of the landlord verification form (rent assistance only).

Applicant's Information

Household Income

Household Income is to be reported for everyone residing in the house who is 18 and older. 
$
Income is defined as the total annual gross income (before taxes) of all family and non-family members
age 18 and older living in the household. All sources of income must be counted from all persons in the
household based on income anticipated to be received within the next twelve (12) months.
Assets are defined as funds available/accessible to the applicant and includes money in savings and
checking accounts; stocks; bonds; certificates of deposit (CDs); 401(k), IRA, and other retirement accounts;
surrender value of life insurance; equity in real estate other than your primary residence; etc.
Please upload the last (3) months of paystubs for everyone working in the household over the age of 18. 
*If you receive SSI/Disability, upload the full award letter.

  How to Apply

  • Complete the online application on this page OR
  • Complete the paper application and email to unitedway@unitedwaymm.com or Mail to United Way of McMinn & Meigs Counties, P.O. Box 1681, Athens, TN  37371 (NOTE: Paper applications are not available and the United Way Office and can not be turned in at the United Way Office)

  Rent Assistance Applicants

  • Rent Assistance applicants are required to provide a completed LandLord Verification Form (Download form HERE) The landlord cannot be a relative of the applicant.
  • A copy of the lease must be provided with the application.

  Utility Assistance Applicants

  • Utilities must be in the applicant’s name.
  • A copy of your most recent utility bill must be provided with the application.

Assistance through this program will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis upon approval.  Only completed applications including all required documentation will be processed to determine what, if any, assistance can be provided. All applications are reviewed on Wednesday in the order that they are received. 

Failure to provide all required documentation with the application will result in the application being denied.
